Building Permit Checklist
No one shall receive a building permit to erect/construct any type of building or addition unless these conditions are met and reviewed by the City of Colona's Building Inspector/Zoning Officer.

- Most set backs are 10 feet rear and 6 feet side.
- Property pins are visible for inspectors.
- Plans and drawings of new buildings with properly engineered stamped trusses.
- No one shall start any type of construction/footing without first securing a building permit.
- All electrical, plumbing, mechanical or roofing work must be done by a licensed professional unless work is being done by the homeowner (excluding rental properties).
- Professional contractors must have a license to do business in the city of Colona and provide proof of insurance and bond. (2010) See the link below for the Contractor License Application.
Building Permit Fees
The valuation of construction projects for the purpose of Permit Fees is as follows:
- $15 per sq ft wood frame - garages, sheds, etc (new construction)
- $18 per sq ft masonry construction - garages, sheds, etc.
- $7 per sq ft open car port
- $78 per sq ft new home construction
- $17 per sq ft storage warehouse, etc.
- $28 per sq ft manufacturing warehouse, etc.

Building permit fees are to be doubled when a building permit has not been acquired by noon on the first day of construction. The property owner shall be directly liable for such permit costs.
Submit completed license and permits with appropriate fees at City Hall, 100 E 9th Ave, Colona, IL between 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Or you may email forms and submit online payment.
Paying Your License and/or Permit Fee Online
You can pay your payment via MuniciPAY using:
- Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express (service fee will apply, see below)
Credit Card Payments Made in Office or Online
The City of Colona offers the convenience of accepting MasterCard, Discover, American Express and Visa credit cards for licenses and permit fees. The payment processing company charges a service fee of 2.65% or $3.00 minimum to cardholders who use this service. If you like, you can just stop by our office to use your MasterCard, Discover Card, American Express or Visa.
Building Inspections
The city's building inspector is part-time and requires a minimum of 48 hours notice for inspections.
Adoption of New Building Codes
The City of Colona adopted new building code ordinances at their February 10, 2014 meeting. These ordinances apply primarily to new construction and remodeling projects. For more information, contact the Public Works Director or one of the City's Building Inspectors.
Enforcement of the Building Code Ordinance (Title 9, Chpt. 1, Section 4A) was amended January 10, 2011 as follows:
